HOW TO CREATE AN ECLECTIC HOME INTERIOR
We love the eclectic interior decor style as it is known for breaking traditional interior design rules and a great design style to experiment and have fun with. We asked our Designist Pro expert interior designers for their advice to create a space like a professional
Below are some great guidelines to consider ensuring the room is a true reflection of your style with one of a kind feel and not just a mish-mash of odds and ends.
1. PLAN A COLOUR MOOD BOARD
Defining a colour mood board at the start of the project is a great way to create a base look of controlled and well-planned dare we say….. calculated chaos.
Play around with a colour palette that makes a statement but can still tie a space together. For example, utilize key pieces like a headboard above your bed or an awe-inspiring art piece to give that pop of contrasting colour. Use the walls to give you a colour tone in the room that assists with creating uniformity and balance.
2. ADD YOUR PERSONALITY
Now, this is where the fun starts. A true Eclectic space is a twist of modern mixed with older or traditional décor pieces. The room should be a display of your life so be bold and display your souvenirs, family keepsakes or mementos that have a personal meaning to you.
Do you have an old flower pot from your great Aunt in Kwa-Zulu Natal? Why not include it as a centerpiece with a modern table tray. Want a bit of glamour in the room? Combine different textures like a smooth lacquered table or chair with plush, textured fabrics like velvet to give that WOW effect.
3. FIND HARMONY
A question we get asked a lot is how to “disrupt” the room to make it look quirky and a bit out of place but still ensure that the room looks well thought out and organized.
Our advice would be to ensure you have enough balance in the room… ask yourself if 3 key focal points is necessary or can 2 also work? Another question to ask is, do you have enough open space in the room… open space is essential to make the room feel balanced and not over cluttered. Open space can be created by keeping a wall empty or leaving a shelf open.
Quick Tip: If you are unsure if there is too much in the room, we suggest to take a photo of the room. This way you can look at the room in detail and it will give you a different viewpoint.
So, there you have it…. Plan your mood board, add your personality and create harmony by using open spaces. Remember this is YOUR space so let your imagination run wild and have fun! An eclectic room gives you the freedom to make the space your own so don’t think so much and experiment with what truly works for you.
